Issues generated by free movement of labor within the EU can be grouped into different problem-areas:

  • ​Brain drain

  • Downward pressure on wages

  • Masking of skilled labor shortage

  • Infrastructural problems arising from net migration

  • Media coverage and political debate


​Political challenges to the principle of free movement itself have mostly been issued by right leaning political parties and EU sceptics on grounds of nationalistic sentiments, concerns for national economies and security. However, on other grounds, f.e. wage concerns, free movement has also been criticized among other political actors within the EU
